Puig Could Allow Dodgers To Deal Veterans

Sep 16, 2014 6:38 PM

The presence of Yasiel Puig could help the Dodgers build an even stronger contender.

Puig, who was optioned to the minor leagues on Tuesday, could push Los Angeles to trade one of their veteran outfielders (Carl Crawford and/or Andre Ethier). That would allow them to acquire more young talent as part of paying Crawford and Ethier's contract.

Yankees Complete Trade For Wells

Sep 25, 2014 12:29 PM

The Yankees have finalized a trade with the Angels for Vernon Wells.

He played left field and hit sixth for his new team on Tuesday, getting his feet wet quickly.

New York sent minor league outfielder Exircardo Cayones and left-hander Kramer Sneed to Los Angeles in exchange for the 34-year-old.

"Just the history and the names that are in this clubhouse, and the guys that are in this clubhouse -- this is special," Wells said. "It's obviously a huge commitment to put the pinstripes on, but this is baseball. This is the center of it all and this is a fun way for things to go toward the end of my career."

The Angels will pay a majority of the $42 million that Wells is owed over the next two seasons. Multiple reports have indicated that the Yankees will pay $13 million over the contract.

Blue Jays Looking For 2B, Bullpen Help

Dec 15, 2014 1:57 AM

Jim Beattie, a scout with the Blue Jays, says the club is looking for help at both second base and in the bullpen.

"This is my fourth year with the Blue Jays and I love it," Beattie said. "We have 22 pro scouts, way more than a lot of teams. When I was with the Expos and Orioles, we had no more than six or eight pro scouts.

"I give Alex [Anthopoulos] coverage reports on players. We're always looking for pitching depth in the bullpen and our situation at second place is a little unsettled. We have two guys (Emilio Bonifaccio and Maicer Izturis) there but they're not an everyday guys."

The Yankees are close to acquiring Vernon Wells from the Angels as they look to patch holes in their injury-riddled lineup.

Los Angeles is expected to eat a significant amount of the veteran's salary, but New York will still pay $5 million to $7 million of his contract in 2013 and 2014.

Last season, Wells batted .232 against right-handed pitching, .227 against lefties.

Tigers Say No Deal Proposed To Padres For Porcello

Jul 11, 2014 3:54 AM

Trade rumors continue to swirl around Rick Porcello, but the Tigers claim they haven't issued proposals to the Padres involving the right-hander.

Jim Bowden, citing a team source, reported on Thursday that Detroit had proposed two offers that were rejected by San Diego -- one for their closer, Huston Street, the other for reliever Luke Gregersen.

Dave Dombrowski, however, told the Detroit News he hasn't made such a proposal. In fact, he said, he hasn't proposed any Porcello deal.

"It's simply not right," Dombrowski said. "Does it mean I don't listen? No. You always listen to what people have to say. Is it going to happen? Most likely not."
